Former Lawmaker Wins Democratic Runoff for Texas House Seat

The Associated Press called the race for Allred, who will face no significant opposition in the November general election.

Background on the District Republicans redrew the Dallas-based seat last year to make it even more Democratic while passing a new congressional map designed to help the GOP flip as many as five seats. The district’s previous incumbent chose not to run for re-election, prompting Johnson to enter the race.

Johnson succeeded Allred in Congress after he vacated the seat to mount a failed bid to unseat a Republican senator in 2024.

Allred decided to challenge Johnson for the open House seat in late 2025 after suspending his 2026 Senate campaign when it failed to gain traction. The former congressman emerged as the top vote-getter in the March 3 primary, leading Johnson by an 11-point margin but falling short of a majority and forcing a runoff.

Allred benefited from higher name recognition from previous statewide runs and a significant fundraising advantage. Johnson received support from House Democratic leadership, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILY’s List and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
