Former Wallabies halves Foley and Phipps agree to return to Waratahs for 2027

Bernard Foley, 36, and Nick Phipps, 37, have agreed to return to the NSW Waratahs for the 2027 Super Rugby season. The former Wallabies halves partners will sign one-year deals after finishing recent playing stints in Japan. The pair started together in the Waratahs' 2014 Super Rugby grand final victory, their only title.

Foley appeared in 119 games for NSW over nine seasons, while Phipps played 87 matches after joining from the Rebels in 2013.

Contract negotiations Foley began talks with the Waratahs in May.

The discussions continued after the resignation of NSW coach Dan McKellar two weeks ago. Both players are expected to finalize contracts shortly, according to informed sources. The signings follow the departure of several playmakers, including Lawson Creighton, Jack Bowen, and Jack Debreczeni. The team also faces the absence of Jake Gordon, who sustained a long-term Achilles injury.

Coaching perspective Rugby Australia boss Phil Waugh said the experience of the returning players would benefit younger squad members and incoming recruit Angus Crichton. He noted that the franchise has lost several homegrown five-eighths since 2019.

Waugh added that the organization is investing in coaching and pathways to retain more talent. Foley told the KOKO podcast he viewed the potential return as an opportunity to contribute during a Rugby World Cup year. In separate Wallabies news, five-eighth Ben Donaldson trained fully on Tuesday and is expected to be available for the Test against Italy in Perth.
