Four Minutes of Brief Exercise Linked to Better Blood Sugar Control in Type 2 Diabetes

Adults with Type 2 diabetes who completed four separate one-minute periods of movement during the day recorded lower blood sugar levels than on days without the activity, according to a study published in April in Diabetologia. The 31 participants, who managed their condition with medication other than insulin, performed the short exercise sessions at home or work.

Each session consisted of one minute of activity such as marching in place, step-ups, speed squats, or jumping jacks, performed at a challenging intensity. Researchers supplied continuous glucose monitors and fitness trackers, then compared blood sugar readings on exercise days with readings on non-exercise days while providing standardized meals.

The study examined whether brief activity periods, sometimes called exercise snacks, could be practical outside controlled laboratory conditions. Participants selected their preferred movements and completed the sessions within an hour of meals when possible.

Blood sugar remained lower during daylight hours on exercise days, and post-meal spikes were shorter and smaller. The improvements were described as modest but consistent with expectations for volunteers whose blood sugar was already well controlled.

The research measured only short-term effects and did not track whether continued use of the activity periods would produce larger or longer-lasting changes. Researchers noted that the specific length and number of sessions were chosen somewhat arbitrarily and that other durations might yield different results.

The study also stated that the brief activity periods are not intended to replace longer, sustained exercise recommended in current guidelines.
