France Coach Didier Deschamps to Miss Norway Match After Mother's Death

France head coach Didier Deschamps will miss his team's final World Cup group match against Norway after learning of his mother's death on Tuesday morning. The French Football Federation said Deschamps will return to France to attend the funeral and will not be on the bench for the June 26 game.
"Didier Deschamps will not be able to be on the bench on Friday for the final Group I game," the federation stated.
"The coach had the painful experience this morning of learning of the death of his mother. " Assistant coach Guy Stephan will take charge of the squad for the match. France, already qualified for the last 32 after a 3-1 win over Senegal and a 3-0 victory against Iraq, will seek to finish top of Group I.
The 57-year-old Deschamps is in his final tournament as France coach after a 14-year tenure that included the 2018 World Cup title, a 2022 World Cup final loss on penalties to Argentina, and a Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal.
