On Sunday, at least ten locations, including Lorient and Noirmoutier, logged record May maximum temperatures.
Brittany remained under the yellow alert on Monday.
A Meteo France spokeswoman stated the warning was the first issued for May since the system was created in 2004. A man died during a 10 km running race in Paris on Sunday after suffering a heart attack, civil defence services said. Ten additional runners were hospitalized in critical condition following a race in the suburb of Maisons-Alfort, authorities reported.
France noted that recurring heatwaves align with patterns associated with global warming. The agency added that such events are projected to become more frequent, longer, and more intense.
