France recorded its first May heatwave alert since the warning system began in 2004, Meteo France said. The national weather service issued the yellow alert on Sunday after temperatures exceeded previous May records at multiple sites. Paris reached 31.9 C on Saturday, marking the first time the city exceeded 30 C this year.

On Sunday, at least ten locations, including Lorient and Noirmoutier, logged record May maximum temperatures.

Brittany remained under the yellow alert on Monday.

A Meteo France spokeswoman stated the warning was the first issued for May since the system was created in 2004. A man died during a 10 km running race in Paris on Sunday after suffering a heart attack, civil defence services said. Ten additional runners were hospitalized in critical condition following a race in the suburb of Maisons-Alfort, authorities reported.

France noted that recurring heatwaves align with patterns associated with global warming. The agency added that such events are projected to become more frequent, longer, and more intense.
