French Medical Groups Urge Tighter Limits on Trace Contaminants in Drinking Water

The National Conference of Regional Unions of Health Professionals sent an open letter on June 1, 2026, to the prime minister and the ministers of health and ecological transition. According to the letter, which Le Monde has seen, chemical pollution of drinking water constitutes a major and too often minimized public health issue.
The same day, the Medical Research Foundation issued a note calling on public authorities to recognize the links between health and the environment. The foundation is France's leading non-profit funder of public health research. Its note highlights the growing gap between scientific knowledge about those links and the current state of regulation.
Private practice doctors had raised the alarm over cadmium in diets one year earlier. A bill aiming to reduce cadmium content in phosphate fertilizers is scheduled for debate at the Assemblée Nationale on June 2, 2026.
In the letter, the National Conference of Regional Unions of Health Professionals expresses concern about drinking water pollution from pesticides, PFAS and microplastics. French drinking water already complies with current EU safety standards.
