Roland Garros director Amelie Mauresmo announced the penalty Monday after the Paraguayan player said his second-round match should have been officiated by a man. The fine equals roughly half of Vallejo's second-round prize money.
ibtimes.co.ukRoland Garros director Amelie Mauresmo announced Monday that Paraguayan player Adolfo Daniel Vallejo has been fined 65,000 euros for remarks he made about the umpire of his second-round French Open match. The fine equals roughly half of the 130,000 euros awarded to players who reach the second round. ESPN reported the amount is approximately $76,000.
Vallejo lost to French teenager Moise Kouame in a five-set match that lasted nearly five hours. The final score was 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (8). After the match, Vallejo told the tennis website Clay that the contest should have been officiated by a man.
"This sort of match needs to be umpired by a man," he said. " Vallejo said the Brazilian umpire, Ana Carvalho, did not control the spectators. He stated the crowd shouted for a full minute without any play and accused Kouame of taking up time by lying on the floor or stalling.
Mauresmo told reporters the fine was issued because the comments were unacceptable. "This is clearly unacceptable," she said. " Vallejo is from Paraguay.
