Future USS Cleveland Sailors Begin Commissioning Week in Namesake City

CLEVELAND — Sailors assigned to the future USS Cleveland arrived in the ship's namesake city on May 15, 2026, to participate in a week of community engagement and celebration events that precede the vessel's formal commissioning.

The future USS Cleveland is the 16th and final Freedom-variant littoral combat ship scheduled for commissioning into the U.S. Navy. Littoral combat ships are designed for operations in shallow coastal waters, with modular mission packages that support mine countermeasures, surface warfare and anti-submarine missions. The Navy has commissioned 15 Freedom-variant ships prior to this final hull.

The arrival marks the transition from construction and crew training to public commissioning activities. The ship will enter operational service upon commissioning at the conclusion of the week's events. No specific commissioning date was listed in the release.

The commissioning will conclude the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship acquisition program. The Navy must next integrate the completed roster of littoral combat ships into fleet operations, schedule follow-on training cycles for the Cleveland's crew, and align maintenance and deployment rotations with the existing LCS fleet.

Congress will receive the final accounting of program costs as the last hull enters service.

This event follows the commissioning of the 15 prior Freedom-variant ships over the past decade. The littoral combat ship program originated in the early 2000s under the George W. Bush administration to provide affordable, reconfigurable vessels for near-shore missions. The Navy has separately pursued frigate designs to complement the LCS fleet in higher-threat environments.
