G7 Leaders Meet in France Amid Divisions on Iran, Ukraine, Trade, and Climate
Allied governments differ on the Iran war, Ukraine support, and trade policy as the annual summit opens in France.
SemaforG7 leaders convened in France on June 16, 2026, with longstanding transatlantic allies divided over the conduct and conclusion of the Iran war and over continued support for Ukraine. Japan also expressed concern that the United States is prioritizing accommodation with China at the expense of its Asian allies.
Bloomberg reported that reaching agreement on a summit communiqué was no longer a priority because of divisions with the United States on issues ranging from trade to climate.
The Wall Street Journal stated that European countries were just trying to avoid a fight. CNN noted that President Donald Trump has repeatedly insulted most of his G7 counterparts over the last several months. Washington’s G7 allies had hoped that signs of discord would not again derail a leaders’ summit that had been arranged to accommodate the United States.
