Georgia Legislature to Draw New State and Congressional Maps in Special Session June 17

Georgia's Republican-led Legislature will convene a special session on June 17 to redraw voting districts for the 2028 elections. The session will cover districts for Congress, the state House, and the state Senate, and may also address districts for the state's utility regulatory commission.

The move follows last summer's actions by President Donald Trump, who urged Texas Republicans to redraw congressional districts ahead of the midterm elections. Other states have undertaken their own redistricting efforts.

In late April, the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling that struck down a majority-Black congressional district in Louisiana as an illegal racial gerrymander. The decision has been cited as providing grounds for map changes in multiple states.

Republicans in Mississippi plan to draw new districts before their 2027 legislative elections. New York Democrats could also undertake legislative redistricting before their 2028 elections.

A national redistricting battle that began in Congress is now extending to statehouses and city councils, according to multiple outlets reporting on post-census map adjustments.

"The stakes here are not political, they are deeply human," said Joe Kennedy III, founder of Groundwork Project, a nonprofit that supports local civil rights and democracy organizations.
