Germany defeated the United States 2-1 in an international friendly at Soldier Field in Chicago on June 6, 2026. The match served as the final warm-up for both teams before the 2026 World Cup. Kai Havertz scored for Germany in the third minute.

Antonee Robinson equalized for the United States in the 37th minute with a strike from 25 yards. Leroy Sané restored Germany’s lead in the 57th minute after receiving a pass from Havertz inside the penalty area. The shot took a deflection that left goalkeeper Matt Freese unable to reach it.

The United States outshot Germany 11-4 in the first half. USA coach Mauricio Pochettino told TNT after the first half that the team had responded well after conceding early.

He said the United States would keep the same starting lineup for the second half before making changes. He added that it was difficult after the early goal but the team did very good things. Pochettino said the result did not go the USA’s way but they showed character, energy and resilience.

Germany made nine straight wins going into the tournament. Attendance at Soldier Field was 63,636 and announced as a sellout. The temperature in Chicago was 79F (26C) on match day. The United States made four substitutions after the 60th minute, bringing on Reyna, Trusty, McKenzie and Berhalter.

Germany sent on Anton, Raum and Undav. The United States made six substitutions in the 73rd minute: Pepi, Aaronson, Arfsten, Weah, Scally and Roldan replaced Balo, Tillman, Ream, Dest, Freeman and Adams. Leweling replaced Sané for Germany during the hydration break around the 73rd minute.

Germany substituted Amiri, Stiller, Beier and Gonetzka in the 80th minute for Wirtz, Nmecha, Musiala and Pavlovic. Reyna had an attempt on goal in the 76th minute that was saved by Baumann. Baumann saved a chance from sub Scally in the 81st minute.

Amiri’s low shot in the 83rd minute went just wide of the left post. Six minutes of stoppage time were added at the end of the second half. Weah was shown a yellow card in the 90+2 minute. Beier was given a yellow card moments before the 90+2 minute incident.

Pochettino made five changes from the Senegal win, starting Matt Freese in goal along with Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman, Miles Robinson and Balogun.
