Giants beat Rockies 3-1 on eighth-inning error

The San Francisco Giants scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning on a throwing error and defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday. Rafael Devers walked to start the eighth, advanced to third on a single, and scored when catcher Hunter Goodman threw wildly into center field on a stolen-base attempt. Grant McCray took third on the error and scored on Willy Adames' single.

McCarthy's inside-the-park home run Jake McCarthy hit a leadoff inside-the-park home run in the first inning for his second such homer this season. McCarthy drove the ball to the 415-foot sign in right-center, where it bounced away from right fielder Jung Hoo Lee; McCarthy slid home ahead of the relay throw.

McCarthy also hit an inside-the-park homer on June 20 at Coors Field. He became the first player with two inside-the-park home runs in one season since 1929.

Series and standings Drew Gilbert's RBI single tied the score in the fourth inning. Trevor McDonald allowed three hits in seven innings for the Giants. Erik Miller struck out the side in the eighth and worked around a single in the ninth. The Giants won three of four in the series and improved to 41-55.

They entered the All-Star break fourth in the NL West. The Rockies fell to 39-59 and have lost four of five.
