Google DeepMind CEO Calls for US-Led Global AI Oversight Body

Google DeepMind CEO and cofounder Demis Hassabis called for a global AI watchdog with authority to evaluate frontier models before release and to coordinate industry-wide slowdowns when models are judged too risky. ” He stated that the United States should lead the initiative because of its economic and technical standing.
The organization would resemble the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and include leading independent experts along with representatives from open-source communities.
Hassabis wrote that artificial general intelligence is probably only a few short years away. He added that the current period will be viewed in decades to come as standing in the foothills of the singularity and the dawning of a new age for humanity.
The Verge reported that Hassabis has spent months quietly building support for the proposal, including briefings to the Trump administration, other AI labs, and European officials.
He told Axios that the noises he has been hearing from the Trump administration are very positive and that he hopes to have the organization up and running before the end of 2026. Hassabis is the joint winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on AI-based protein prediction.
The Verge reported that he also signed a statement last month calling for tougher protections against AI-aided bioweapons production.
