Google has restricted Meta’s use of its Gemini AI models after the social media company requested more computing capacity than Google could supply. The limits have delayed some of Meta’s internal AI projects and prompted the company to instruct staff to use AI tokens more efficiently.
claimsjournal.comGoogle has placed limits on Meta’s use of its Gemini AI models after determining it could not meet the full computing capacity the social media company sought to purchase. The Financial Times reported that Google informed Meta around March that it could not fulfill the requested volume. The shortfall disrupted and delayed several of Meta’s internal AI projects.
Several other Google clients have also been affected by the same capacity limits, though to a lesser extent than Meta. Meta’s exceptionally high demand for the models made it the most impacted customer, according to the report.
In response to the restrictions, Meta has encouraged staff to be more efficient with AI tokens, the units used to measure AI usage. Reuters could not immediately verify the report, which cited people familiar with the matter. Google and Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours.
Even as companies continue to spend billions on chips and data centers, they are still struggling to secure enough computing power to support the growing demand for AI services. Revenue at Google Cloud grew to $20 billion in the first quarter ended March, but computing power constraints prevented even higher growth and contributed to the cloud unit’s backlog nearly doubling quarter on quarter.
