Google Announces New AI Features for Android, Maps, Instagram and Googlebook Laptop Platform
Google unveiled Gemini Intelligence to automate smartphone tasks and a new laptop platform called Googlebook during its Android Show. The announcements include redesigned Android Auto with 60 fps video support in vehicles from 11 manufacturers, expanded Quick Share compatibility with Apple devices and multiple AI tools rolling out this year and in 2026.
WiredGoogle held a livestreamed Android Show event where it announced a new Gemini Intelligence AI system that combines the company’s top AI tools into one system. The system will automate tasks by directly interacting with apps on a user’s smartphone, such as turning a grocery list into a shopping basket or ordering books from an emailed class list.
Gemini Intelligence will queue up orders before handing them over to the user for final confirmation.
Chrome auto browse will be able to navigate sites and perform tasks for users in the browser, launching from late June. Autofill is being upgraded to fill in more complex forms by automatically pulling information from apps and services. Generative user interfaces will create home screen widgets through simple natural language instructions, while a new Create My Widget feature lets users generate custom widgets by describing them in natural language and launches first on latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer.
Gboard’s dictation system is receiving an AI upgrade called Rambler that edits speech into concise sentences, removing redundant or repeated words, umms, errs and other errors. Rambler can switch between languages mid-speech. Pause Point is a new tool that prompts a pop-up with breathing exercises, favourite photos or productive apps when users tap a flagged distracting app, and app timers can be set with Pause Point to limit doom scrolling.
Quick Share compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop expands from Pixel devices to phones from Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor. Quick Share can share files with Apple devices using QR codes and the cloud and will be available within apps such as WhatsApp.
A new iOS-to-Android transfer tool lets users import passwords, photos, messages, favorite apps, contacts, eSIM, and home screen layout and launches on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this year.
Instagram on Android is receiving on-device editing tools including a one-tap smart enhancement tool and a sound separation tool. Instagram on Android will support ultra HDR capture and playback, video stabilisation and night-sight integration. Screen Reactions will record a user and their screen simultaneously to create reaction videos and rolls out first on Pixel devices this summer.
Google redesigned all 4,000 emojis to make them 3D. The new 3D emojis launch later this year on Pixel devices and services. Android Auto is receiving a redesign with smooth animations, bolder fonts, colours and wallpapers.
Android Auto will allow widgets and shortcuts to be added to the car’s display and will integrate Gemini Intelligence features from compatible phones. Video playback is allowed on Android Auto when the car is parked and switches to audio-only when moving. Android Auto’s new immersive navigation in Google Maps creates a 3D view of buildings, bridges and terrain.
Google Maps in Android Auto will overlay lane guidance, traffic lights and road signs on routes. Gemini is rolling out broadly on Android Auto, and users will be able to place food orders from Android Auto beginning with DoorDash. Video playback on Android Auto will support 60 fps full HD in supported cars later this year.
The first cars to support 60 fps full HD video on Android Auto are from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Google announced a new laptop platform called Googlebook that will be produced by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Googlebooks launch in autumn 2026.
Googlebooks feature an Android-centered operating system, include the Chrome browser and Android apps, and include Gemini Intelligence features. Googlebook was internally codenamed Aluminium OS. Googlebooks have a “glowbar” on the lid and offer seamless connectivity with Android devices.
Googlebook laptops include a “Magic Pointer” that turns the mouse cursor into an AI pointer offering contextually aware help. Theft protection features become default-on for all new Android 17 devices globally.
