WiredGoogle began taking preorders June 17 for a redesigned smart speaker that runs the Gemini assistant for more natural conversations. Sales start June 25 at a price of $100.
The new device is smaller than Google’s prior Nest Audio model and features an orb-shaped body for 360-degree audio. It includes a glowing ring of lights at the base and capacitive touch controls on top along with a hardware mute switch.
The speaker accepts natural phrasing and multiple commands in one sentence without requiring the wake word to be repeated. Gemini Live mode requires a Google Home Premium subscription. Anish Kattukaran, chief product officer at Google Nest and Google Home, said the speaker runs local models that filter background noise.
Five million homes across 20 countries have opted into Gemini since early access opened last fall.
The device serves as a hub for other smart-home products. Buyers receive six months of Google Home Premium, which adds automations, video history, and camera notifications. Apple plans to release a revised smart speaker later this year while Amazon continues rolling out Alexa+ to Echo devices.
