Greenlanders Protest New U.S. Consulate Opening in Nuuk

Hundreds of Greenlanders gathered outside the new U.S. consulate in Nuuk on Friday to protest against President Trump's stated desire for greater U.S. influence over the island. The demonstrators walked through the town center chanting "Greenland is for Greenlanders" before standing in silence with their backs turned toward the building.

Organizers said the action sent a clear message that Greenland would not be sold or controlled by outside powers.

The new consulate occupies a 3,000-square-meter high-rise in central Nuuk after moving from a smaller wooden cabin on the outskirts. The U.S. president's special envoy to Greenland visited the territory for three days without an official invitation and met with local officials and business leaders. The envoy returned to the United States on Wednesday evening. Greenlandic politicians largely declined to attend the consulate opening.

One member of the Danish parliament who represents Greenland said the decision reflected a desire to send signals about sovereignty concerns.
