Hanwha Eagles Pitcher Reflects on Temporary KBO stint as Contract Nears End
A right-handed pitcher who joined the Hanwha Eagles in early April as a temporary injury replacement will see his six-week contract expire on Friday. The player filled in for an injured foreign pitcher and appeared in 14 games, recording three saves. He told Yonhap News Agency he enjoyed the experience and the relationships formed with teammates despite cultural and language differences.
Substrate placeholder — needs reviewA right-hander signed with the Hanwha Eagles as a temporary injury replacement in early April after knowing little about the Korea Baseball Organization. Although he had friends who had played in the South Korean league, the pitcher wanted to experience the KBO for himself. "It's been awesome.
I've just really enjoyed it," the pitcher told Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday before the Eagles played the Kiwoom Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. " The contract will expire Friday. The pitcher signed for six weeks to fill in for an injured starter, a short-term arrangement the KBO has permitted since 2024.
The original pitcher is eligible to return Saturday and is expected to start either Saturday or Sunday. The temporary player said he tried not to focus on the uncertainty of his contract. "Every day, I'm going out there, throwing my game, competing, but I'm not really putting any attention toward that time expiring," he said.
"I'm just going to go out there and compete for the team and just do my job. And whenever that time comes that it ends, it ends. " The pitcher, who has reached Triple-A in the U.S. minor leagues but has not appeared in the major leagues, said he was unsure what would come after this weekend.
He added that he would wait to see if any other KBO team wanted to sign him. His ability to both start and relieve could benefit teams needing pitching depth. He made his KBO debut as a starter on April 12 and then pitched the next 13 games out of the bullpen.
After the team's closer struggled, the pitcher was used in closing situations and recorded three saves in four opportunities. 233 batting average. His ERA was raised by two poor performances: allowing three runs in three innings in his first start against the Kia Tigers and giving up four runs in two innings of relief against the Samsung Lions on May 3.
Removing those two outings, he posted a 2.03 ERA over 13 1/3 innings. The pitcher said moving between the rotation and bullpen was not difficult because he has done so throughout his career. "Going to the bullpen, it's a little bit different routine warming up, but it was a fairly easy adjustment for me," he added.
He said he enjoyed recording his first strikeout, win and save in the KBO. The pitcher highlighted building relationships with teammates as the most memorable part. "The relationships, getting to hang out with the guys every day," he said.
"A lot of them haven't been to America, and I haven't been over here. " "The language barrier obviously is a little bit harder, but I honestly think that that is going to be resonating with me in the future," the pitcher continued. "Everybody has been so positive, and everybody has accepted me for who I am.
