A heat dome will cover much of the Northeast and Midwest beginning Tuesday and peaking along the Mid-Atlantic coast on Wednesday, New York Post reported. The system stretches across a 1,500-mile area from the Dakotas to New Hampshire. New York City is forecast to reach 99 degrees on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Baltimore and Atlantic City are each forecast to reach 102 degrees, while Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Newark are forecast to reach 101 degrees. Temperatures reached 115 degrees in Montana on Sunday and 100 degrees in Michigan on Monday. Thunder Bay, Ontario, recorded a record high of 102.4 degrees.
More than 110 million people in the Northeast are living in areas covered by heat alerts as of early Tuesday. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is forecast to blow across the Great Lakes into the Northeast on Wednesday, affecting air quality in New York, Buffalo, Detroit, and Minneapolis.
“The smoke plume later tonight into Wednesday could be quite thick,” the National Weather Service in Binghamton, New York, stated.
Prolonged heat could bring severe thunderstorms to parts of northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine on Wednesday, with damaging winds and tornadoes possible.
