Heatwave Persists Across Europe With Record Temperatures

Record temperatures continued across Europe on Friday and into the weekend. The western German city of Saarbrücken recorded 41.3°C, the highest temperature ever measured in Germany. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day on record, with the village of Santon Downham in Suffolk reaching 37.3°C.

France also set a national record on Wednesday when the average 24-hour temperature hit 30°C. Paris banned public alcohol consumption over the weekend and postponed the city's Pride March, originally scheduled for Saturday. The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum will close early.

French departments remained under a red heat alert on Saturday, dropping to 24 departments on Sunday, according to Météo-France. The mayor of Paris said a man drowned in the Canal Saint-Martin on Friday night and warned against swimming outside supervised areas.

Parts of eastern and southeast England stayed under an amber heat warning on Saturday. Spain recorded temperatures above 40°C in some areas, with its national weather agency forecasting above-normal warmth into next week. Emergency services across the continent reported increased callouts as residents sought relief in parks and canals.
