House Advances $70B Immigration Enforcement Bill in Procedural Vote, Set for Final Passage as Shutdown Stalemate Nears End

U.S. House advanced a $70 billion immigration enforcement funding package on Tuesday after clearing an initial procedural vote. All Republicans supported the measure, which cleared the hurdle by a narrow margin.
The package would fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection through the end of President Donald Trump's term. The Senate passed the bill last Friday on a 52-47 vote with no Democratic support. President Trump had called for the legislation to reach his desk by June 1.
House Speaker Mike Johnson met with the president on Tuesday to discuss the funding and related priorities. Democrats opposed the measure. " Some Republicans also raised concerns. Chip Roy told House leadership he remained undecided.
Kevin Kiley, who switched from Republican to independent in March but still caucuses with the GOP, said he opposed the package without changes to enforcement priorities. "I thought we had a golden opportunity to come together as a Congress to implement those reforms and to rebuild trust and to focus immigration enforcement where most people think it should be, on those who posed the risk to public safety," Kiley said outside the House chamber.

The package has broad support among Republican congressional leadership, though Republicans hold only a narrow House majority. Johnson also discussed an extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, which expires June 12.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said negotiations over the extension were already sensitive before President Trump named Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte as director of national intelligence. Pulte has no known prior intelligence experience. Jeffries called for the appointment to be reversed immediately.
Some Republicans have also urged the president to drop Pulte from the role.
