Chair James Comer issued the subpoenas Friday after Black declined to answer questions about nondisclosure agreements during a transcribed interview. One requires a July 16 deposition and the other demands production of the agreements. The panel is examining connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
The HillHouse Oversight Committee Chair James Comer issued two subpoenas to billionaire investor Leon Black on Friday after Black refused to answer questions about nondisclosure agreements with women during a voluntary transcribed interview. One subpoena requires Black to appear before the committee for a deposition on July 16. The second requires him to produce the nondisclosure agreements.
Comer said answers about the terms and substance of the NDAs are critical to the investigation. He stated that lawmakers want to know whether Epstein was involved in the NDAs, in writing them, or in awarding funds to the women. Black, former chief executive of Apollo Global Management, said in opening remarks that he was not involved with and had no knowledge of any of Epstein’s heinous conduct.
His attorney Susan Estrich told reporters that lawmakers made a premeditated political decision to serve the subpoenas after less than an hour of questioning. She said Epstein had no involvement with any NDAs and that Black never abused a woman or engaged in sex trafficking. A woman filed a lawsuit in 2022 accusing Black of rape and accusing Epstein of helping facilitate the attack.
Black stepped down from his positions at Apollo after the allegations became public. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam said the committee wants Black to answer questions about what he knew about Epstein and whether he was involved in crimes himself.
