House Votes 215-208 to Limit Iran Action, With Four Republicans in Favor
The House voted 215-208 on Wednesday to require congressional approval before U.S. forces can engage Iran. Four Republicans joined all Democrats present in support.
Fox NewsThe House of Representatives voted 215-208 on Wednesday to restrict President Trump's authority to conduct military operations against Iran without additional congressional authorization. S. troops from using force against Iran absent new legislative approval.
All Democrats present supported the resolution. Four Republicans joined the Democratic majority. The lawmakers represent districts in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. A majority of Republicans opposed the resolution.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast said the vote was a political exercise without clear operational meaning. "It’s just a total BS vote. I think there’s no Democrat, no Republican that can tell you what forces they would want pulled from Iran," Mast told Fox News.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats had succeeded in holding the president accountable after earlier attempts to secure Republican support failed. The vote occurred while the United States and Iran continue limited strikes despite earlier ceasefire announcements. Negotiations for a broader agreement remain stalled.
A Fox News poll conducted in May found that roughly six in ten voters oppose military action against Iran, while 72 percent of respondents said the United States is winning the conflict. Some Republicans argued the resolution would weaken the president's negotiating position. Rep.
Abe Hamadeh said the conflict has largely subsided since the first ceasefire in early April. "It doesn’t seem like it’s much of a war at this point," Hamadeh told Fox News. A similar measure advanced in the Senate in May but has not yet produced a bicameral bill that could reach the president's desk.
Republican leadership had delayed an earlier attempt to bring the measure to a vote in late May due to attendance concerns among GOP members. House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, who sponsored the resolution, said Democrats had the votes to pass the measure before the delay.
