Hundreds March in Tunis Demanding Release of Jailed Opposition Figures and Greater Media Freedoms
Demonstrators in Tunisia's capital called for an end to restrictions on media and the freeing of opposition figures held since President Kais Saied began a crackdown on dissent.
Hundreds of people marched through Tunisia's capital on Saturday to demand press freedom and the release of political prisoners detained under President Kais Saied's crackdown on dissent. The demonstration focused on two main demands: an end to curbs on independent reporting and the freeing of opposition figures jailed in recent years.
Among those named by organizers was Ennahda party leader Rached Ghannouchi, who remains in detention.
President Kais Saied has conducted a sustained campaign against dissent since taking expanded powers in 2021. The measures have resulted in the imprisonment of several prominent political opponents and journalists. @AJEnglish reported that the march proceeded through central Tunis without reported clashes with security forces.
Participants carried signs calling for the restoration of media freedoms that had expanded after the 2011 revolution. The protest comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against several detained figures, including Ghannouchi, whose party was a major force in post-revolution governments. No official response from the presidency was issued on the day of the march.
