Hungary’s parliament to elect new president within 30 days after constitutional amendment removes Sulyok

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar proposed chess grandmaster Judit Polgar to serve as the country's next president and said he will meet her on Monday to ask whether she accepts the role. Magyar made the announcement in a Facebook post Sunday, the same day Tamas Sulyok's presidency ended after lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment last week that removed him from office.

Agnes Forsthoffer, speaker of parliament, will serve as acting head of state until a new president is elected.

"Our country needs unity, peace and a president of whom all Hungarians can be proud," Magyar wrote. " Polgar, who turns 50 this week, retired from competitive chess in 2014 after holding the top ranking among women players for 25 years. She is the only woman to have crossed the 2700-rating threshold and led Hungary's women's team, alongside her sisters Zsuzsa and Zsofia and Ildiko Madl, to victory at the 1988 Chess Olympiad.

Parliament has 30 days to elect a new president.
