Imee Marcos Alleges Quiet Charter Change to Extend Brother’s Term, Later Withdraws Claims After Majority Pushback
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. rejected claims that he seeks to suspend the 2028 elections. Rappler reported the denial followed a May 22 video alleging his son Sandro would replace him.
manilatimes.netPresident Ferdinand Marcos Jr. denied claims that he is pushing to suspend the 2028 elections and dismissed allegations made by his sister, Senator Imee Marcos, as fake news. Marcos spoke at a press conference in Tokyo, Japan, on May 29.
“She should fire her staffer who gave her that information,” he said. He added that fake news hurts everyone, including its purveyors, and urged his sister to choose her sources of information better. A video uploaded on May 22 claimed there would be no elections in 2028 and that Marcos would be replaced by his son, House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos.
The video, posted by the YouTube channel “JAY GUEVARRA TV,” which has over 509,000 subscribers, has received more than 26,000 views, 2,200 likes, and 450 comments. 4 million followers, carried the same claim and recorded over 273,000 views, 11,600 reactions, 1,700 comments, and 830 shares. Both videos attributed the claim to remarks by Senator Imee Marcos.
On May 25, during a Senate plenary session, Imee Marcos delivered a privilege speech in which she played a nine-minute video alleging that members of the minority bloc were quietly pushing for charter change to extend the terms of incumbent officials, including her brother’s presidency.
She also claimed there were proposals to raise the minimum age requirement for presidential candidates to block Vice President Sara Duterte from running. The minority bloc denied the allegations and called them a conspiracy theory.
Imee Marcos later withdrew her remarks and the video from the records. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the administration will follow the law and that plans for the 2028 elections remain on track. “Kung anuman ang tungkol sa batas, hindi iyan lumalabag sa batas.
Meron tayong batas patungkol sa susunod na eleksyon, 2028, so nakakasiguro tayo na ang Pangulo ay susunod sa batas,” she said. Malacañang described Imee Marcos’s claims as a diversionary tactic intended to conceal other issues, including Vice President Sara Duterte’s looming impeachment trial and Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa’s evasion of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant.
Castro said the tactic was meant to cover up events in the Senate involving Senator Robin Padilla helping dela Rosa leave, the shooting incident, and who wanted the chaos.
