India introduced its first hydrogen-powered train designed and built in the country on Friday. The train will operate in Haryana and forms part of efforts to test the technology ahead of a 2070 net-zero target.
Abc NewsIndia placed its first domestically built hydrogen-powered train into service on Friday. The train consists of two hydrogen-powered driving cars and eight passenger coaches and will operate in the northern state of Haryana. Railway officials said it can reach speeds of up to 75 kph and carry about 2,600 passengers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the train, named “NaMo Green Rail,” at Jind railway station. The project includes hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure to test the technology on the rail network. “This is a very significant day in the direction of self-reliant India and sustainable development,” Modi said in a post on X.
Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor as the only direct emission. Several other countries already operate hydrogen trains on routes that are not fully electrified. The launch supports India’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.
