India Blocks Telegram Access Nationwide Until June 22
Government officials ordered the messaging app blocked through June 22 after linking it to exam-cheating operations. The action affects India's largest Telegram user base by download volume.
indiatoday.intoday.inIndia's government directed internet service providers to block Telegram nationwide, with the restriction set to last until June 22. Officials cited the platform's use by groups running cheating operations tied to the national medical entrance examination.
The same exam had already been canceled last month after its questions appeared online ahead of the scheduled date. The current block rests on an information-technology provision that permits removal of any service on grounds of national sovereignty and integrity.
Telegram ranks as the country's top messaging app by number of downloads. The nationwide suspension therefore reaches every user regardless of involvement in the reported exam-related activity. The order does not name individual accounts or channels; it applies to the entire service for the stated period.
