India Youth Campaign Uses Cockroach Symbol to Highlight Unemployment

An online campaign called the Cockroach Janta Party gained more than 22 million social media followers within a week after India's top judge compared unemployed youth to cockroaches. The satirical group formed after the judge's remarks and invited people to join under the hashtag #MainBhiCockroach.
The campaign's emblem shows a cartoon cockroach eating a lotus flower, the symbol of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Within a day of launch, more than 3 million people joined the party online. The judge later recanted the comparison.
Bureau raised national security concerns about the movement, according to The Indian Express. BJP leaders stated that most followers were from Pakistan. Campaign organizer Abhijeet Dipke responded with analytics showing 94 percent of followers were from India.
Authorities removed the campaign's website and blocked its social media accounts over the weekend. New accounts appeared shortly afterward. The group posted that cockroaches survive.
India's unemployment rate for people aged 15 to 24 stands at 16 percent. Graduate unemployment reaches 40 percent. 8 million jobs for them. Research fellow Teesta Prakash at the Australia-India Institute stated the campaign reflects real problems facing India's Gen Z population.
She noted the BJP campaigned on job creation in 2014, 2019, and 2024 but has not produced jobs at the rate people turn 18.
Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal were removed by youth-led protests since 2022, with high youth unemployment cited as a central cause. India's median age is 28, with most of the population under 30. Prakash said India's size and cultural diversity make nationwide mobilization more difficult than in smaller neighboring countries.
