Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi left a joint press event in Norway without answering questions from reporters on Monday. Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng Svendsen of the newspaper Dagsavisen asked Modi why he does not take questions from the press.

Modi walked out of the room without replying. Svendsen followed him and asked whether he deserved the trust of the Norwegian government. She received no response.

Modi has not held a news conference in India during his 12-year term. He has rarely taken questions on foreign trips, including two instances in Washington in 2023. George responded by discussing India’s historical contributions and its distribution of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Svendsen later posted on social media that foreign leaders visiting Norway normally answer at least some questions. She said she had received both supportive messages and online harassment after the events. The incidents occurred during Modi’s two-day visit to Norway, which included meetings with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and participation in the India-Nordic Summit.
