Six States Hold Primaries for Governor and Senate Seats; California Has 61-Candidate Field
Primary elections were held Tuesday in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The contests set the field for November races that could determine control of the U.S. Senate and House.

Sixty-one candidates are running to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom in California. The top two vote-getters advance to the November general election regardless of party. S.
Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and businessman Tom Steyer leading among Democrats, while former Fox News host Steve Hilton leads among Republicans. Hilton received President Trump’s endorsement in April. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco also seeks the Republican nomination.
Democratic candidates include former Representative Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and state Superintendent Tony Thurmond. Representative Eric Swalwell withdrew earlier this year after facing allegations he denies.
Independent candidate Spencer Pratt, backed by President Trump, faces Mayor Karen Bass, who seeks a second term in the Los Angeles mayor race.
Pratt’s campaign focuses on homelessness, crime and government accountability. Bass holds endorsements from former Vice President Kamala Harris and Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla. A recent poll showed Bass at 26 percent, City Councilmember Nithya Raman at 25 percent and Pratt at 22 percent.
If no candidate receives more than 50 percent, the top two advance to a November runoff. Republicans select nominees to succeed retiring Governor Kim Reynolds and Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa. President Trump endorsed Representative Randy Feenstra in the gubernatorial primary, which also includes Zach Lahn, state Representative Eddie Andrews, former state Representative Brad Sherman and former state administrative services director Adam Steen.
Democratic state Auditor Rob Sand faces no primary opponent. Representative Ashley Hinson leads the Republican Senate primary against former state Senator Jim Carlin. Hinson holds endorsements from President Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
The Iowa Senate seat is among roughly a dozen contests that will determine whether Republicans retain their 53-47 majority. Additional primaries are scheduled in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.
