Officials from Steel Authority of India and NMDC Ltd traveled to Russia last month to discuss possible purchases of coking coal assets. The two companies held talks with Russian government and industry representatives, according to Indian sources who spoke with Reuters on Tuesday.

India currently obtains about half of its steelmaking coal from Australia, with Russia and the United States supplying additional volumes.

One source told Reuters that both companies are exploring raw-material sourcing options with Russia. The discussions aim to increase available supply for India's steel industry.
