The Indiana Fever fell to the Golden State Valkyries 88-75 on July 15 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Caitlin Clark, the Fever guard selected first overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, scored 13 points in the game. In the second quarter Clark drove for a lay-up and fell after contact from Valkyries center Kiah Stokes.
She appeared to limp afterward. Moments later Clark shouted at referee Gerda Gatling, using an expletive: "Give me a call. " Clark left the court after the exchange but returned to finish the contest.
After the game she said the official had told her she initiated contact. "You can't miss calls like that," Clark stated. "I had to play with a contusion on my leg for the rest of the game. It's ridiculous.
She said I initiated contact, which is fine. " This marked the second time in a month that Clark had complained about Gatling's officiating. Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White had also criticized referees last month for their handling of calls involving Clark.
