South China Morning PostIndonesia's communications and digital ministry blocked access to the predictions market Polymarket as part of its enforcement of online gambling prohibitions. The action followed the platform's listing of contracts on a premature end to President Prabowo Subianto's term. Gambling is illegal in Indonesia. The ministry stated that the government will not allow any form of online gambling.
Ministry official Alexander Sabar said late on Friday that Polymarket was classified as an online gambling platform. He added that its activities contain betting and speculation over events that are inconclusive, therefore violating Indonesian law. Polymarket responded on Tuesday that the company was committed to engaging with authorities.
It said it welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Indonesia on a path forward that supports responsible innovation, transparency and user protection in prediction markets.
