Many organizations are attempting to run artificial intelligence systems on infrastructure built decades ago. Stanford University’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute reported that generative AI reached 53 percent adoption among the global population within three years of ChatGPT’s launch.

According to Gartner, outdated systems consume more than 75 percent of IT budgets at many financial institutions. These platforms were designed for an earlier era of limited computing power and storage.

Layers of patches and integrations have added complexity to older systems. Institutional knowledge about how the systems function has declined as original architects retire. Data stored in different formats across multiple systems requires additional manipulation during migration. This process increases both complexity and risk when organizations attempt to deploy AI.

Organizations can build modern infrastructure alongside existing systems and migrate capabilities gradually. Payment networks still use messaging protocols that date back to the 1980s. Modern platforms interact with legacy systems through translation layers that convert old messages into new formats.

This approach maintains compatibility with existing networks during the transition. Infrastructure modernization is viewed as a strategic decision rather than a purely technical upgrade. Organizations that redesign systems with updated assumptions can reduce long-term security and operational risks.
