Instagram Ends Optional End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages
Meta switched off the feature on 8 May 2026 after updating its terms in March, citing low user opt-in rates. The reversal ends a 2019 pledge by the company to expand encryption across its messaging services. Child protection groups welcomed the move while privacy advocates expressed disappointment.
BBC NewsInstagram switched off end-to-end encryption for direct messages globally on 8 May 2026. The removal means Meta can now access all content of direct messages, including images, videos and voice notes. Meta updated Instagram's terms and conditions in March to state that end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May 2026.
The company did not publicly announce its decision to abandon plans for the Instagram E2EE rollout. Meta told reporters the decision to abandon wider E2EE rollout on Instagram was taken because too few users were opting in. Instagram had made end-to-end encryption optional with plans to make it default before reversing course.
BBC News reported that the company completed the rollout of end-to-end encryption on Facebook Messenger in 2023. In 2019 Meta pledged to introduce end-to-end encryption across messaging on Facebook and Instagram. The pledge followed years of defending the plans amid technical challenges and criticism.
By switching off E2EE, Instagram will now offer only standard encryption. Standard encryption means an internet service provider can access private material if needed. It is the common system in most major online services such as Gmail.
The decision has drawn contrasting reactions. Victoria Baines, professor of IT at Gresham College, said the decision reflects a shift in Meta's attitude towards privacy and cited monetisation of communications for targeted advertising and training AI models. Instagram has previously said direct messages are not used to train AI.
Last month, Meta told staff that their clicks and activity on work devices would begin to be collected as training data for the company's AI models. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri declined to be interviewed about the decision. The company declined to comment further on its decision to reverse course on privacy.
In March 2026, TikTok told the BBC it had no plans to introduce end-to-end encryption for direct messages. The reversal marks the end of a seven-year effort that began with Meta's 2019 commitment. Until the March terms update, the direction across the industry had largely favored greater adoption of the technology, though commentators suggest these decisions may now slow its spread beyond dedicated messaging apps.
