Iran and U.S. Trade Strikes After Ceasefire Breach in Strait of Hormuz

Iran launched drone attacks against Bahrain and a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, said it was struck by a number of Iranian drones and condemned the attacks as a blatant violation of its sovereignty.

An unidentified projectile also struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, damaging its bridge. The crew remained safe and no environmental damage occurred, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center. The U.S.

Military carried out strikes on Iranian military sites on Friday in response to Iran’s initial attack on a commercial ship in the strait on Thursday. Those U.S. strikes targeted Iranian positions after Tehran violated the 60-day ceasefire agreement signed by Washington and Tehran the previous week.

Iran’s military stated it had targeted several unnamed locations of the U.S. military in the Persian Gulf. A U.S. official stated the strikes do not reflect a return to major combat operations, at least for now.

Bahrain accused Tehran of destabilizing security and undermining regional stability. The kingdom called the attacks a blatant breach of international norms and conventions that prohibit targeting civilian objects and terrorizing innocent people.
