An Iranian Mahan Air flight landed in Sanaa this week, the first direct civilian flight from Iran into Houthi-held Yemen in around 11 years. The plane returned more than 200 wounded and stranded Yemenis who had been abroad. It then carried a high-level Houthi delegation to Tehran.
Friday evening, crowds gathered in Al-Sabeen Square in Sanaa to mark the arrival. Yemen's internationally recognized government condemned the flight as a violation of sovereignty and UN resolutions. Houthi military officials said Saudi jets attempted to intercept the aircraft but were driven off.
That account has not been independently confirmed. One plane produced differing interpretations. Tehran secured attendance at an event in its capital, while the Houthi side gained a public rally and a claim of breaking an air blockade.
