Iraqi security forces arrested politicians, lawmakers and senior government officials early on Sunday in raids inside Baghdad's Green Zone. Elite Counter Terrorism Service units carried out the operations on direct orders from Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Al-Monitor reported.
The raids followed recent arrests of senior officials on corruption charges, including deputy oil minister Adnan al-Jumaili.
Judicial authorities had issued additional warrants based in part on testimony from al-Jumaili, a senior source told state news agency INA. No official statement has been issued about the detentions. Some suspects escaped before forces arrived, prompting authorities to close Green Zone entrances and begin a wider search, three security and legal sources said.
Zaidi took office in May 2026 and has pledged to address entrenched corruption. The sources said the campaign is expected to continue in coming days.
