Israeli Forces Capture Beaufort Castle in Southern Lebanon
Israeli troops seized a 12th-century castle overlooking the Litani valley, marking a deeper push into Lebanese territory beyond the river line. The move drew criticism from European governments and renewed accusations that both sides are violating a temporary ceasefire.
middleeasteye.netIsraeli forces captured Beaufort Castle, a strategic hilltop site in southern Lebanon, during an expanding ground operation against Hezbollah positions. The military said a significant number of ground soldiers took part in the seizure, which occurred roughly 14.5 km from the Israeli border.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the capture as a decisive shift in policy and said Israel aims to deepen its control over areas previously held by Hezbollah.
The Israel Defense Forces issued a second evacuation warning in recent days, directing residents to leave territory south of the Zahrani river. An IDF spokesman stated that anyone near Hezbollah facilities endangers their life. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the escalation has killed and displaced civilians and must end, while also calling on Hezbollah to stop attacks on Israel and disarm.
Lebanon's prime minister accused Israel of collective punishment and a scorched-earth policy in the south.
Castle was built by Crusaders about 900 years ago and has changed hands multiple times, including an earlier Israeli capture in 1982 that ended with withdrawal in 2000. Defence Minister Israel Katz noted the Golani Brigade raised the Israeli flag over the site, recalling its role in earlier fighting.
Smoke was reported near the castle on Sunday, and an Israeli flag along with what appeared to be a Golani Brigade flag were seen flying above the structure. Lebanon's Health Ministry said 13 hospital staff were injured in an airstrike near Hiram hospital in Tyre.
One additional Israeli soldier was reported killed, and schools on the Israeli side of the border remained closed as a precaution. Hezbollah fired about 25 projectiles toward northern Israel on Saturday. Both sides continue to accuse each other of violating the temporary ceasefire that took effect last month and has already been extended twice.
A fourth round of negotiations between Israeli and Lebanese delegations is scheduled in Washington this week, though Hezbollah is not participating in the talks.
