Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza-Bound Flotilla, Detain Crews After Warnings Ignored

Two filmmakers have recounted experiences of intimidation, abuse and imprisonment after Israeli forces confronted the Global Sumud Flotilla as it approached Gaza last year. The flotilla, consisting of 50 civilian vessels, set sail in September 2025 from Barcelona, Tunis, and Sicily with the aim to deliver aid and open a humanitarian corridor to Gaza.

Mexican filmmaker Carlos Perez was aboard the vessel Hio while Australian filmmaker Juliet Lamont sailed on the Wahoo.

Both shared their firsthand accounts in testimony featured in the documentary The Flotilla Diaries by Dasa Raimanova. As the vessels neared Gaza, Israel warned that the area was an active combat zone. The boats continued forward despite the warning.

Water cannons then struck vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla vanished from radar during the confrontation. Crews from the Global Sumud Flotilla were arrested in the aftermath.

Perez and Lamont described the sequence as a harrowing ordeal that included direct intimidation and physical abuse before their imprisonment.
