Israeli troops captured a strategic mountain site topped by a 12th-century Crusader castle in southern Lebanon on Sunday, the military said. The site, known as Beaufort castle, lies near Nabatiyeh and had been held by Israeli forces from 1982 until their withdrawal in 2000. The latest operation followed airstrikes and fighting in nearby villages.

Advance during nominal ceasefire The push came despite a ceasefire declared on April 17 and days before scheduled direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington starting Tuesday. Israeli forces have captured dozens of villages and towns near the border since the current round of fighting began on March 2.

Hezbollah has fired thousands of missiles and drones into northern Israel and at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.

Symbolic and strategic site The castle overlooks the Litani River and wide areas of southern Lebanon and northern Israel. It has been used by successive armies, including Saladin’s forces, the Mamluks, Ottomans, the French mandate, and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Israeli troops raised a flag over the castle, according to photographs posted by the military’s Arabic-language spokesperson. Officials said the site would be held while forces work to destroy additional structures used by Hezbollah.

Regional reactions and talks French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting and described the operations as unacceptable. The advance also intersects with separate U.S.-Iran discussions on extending a ceasefire in the Iran conflict, with Tehran seeking an end to fighting in Lebanon as part of any agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the occupation of Beaufort marked a shift in policy and cited the deaths of 3,000 Hezbollah fighters since March. Hezbollah has not released casualty figures. Israeli forces have designated territory between the Litani and Zahrani rivers a combat zone and have ordered residents to leave parts of the area, including near Nabatiyeh and the city of Tyre.

The same facts could be read as Israel finally retaking a historically vital defensive position used for decades to threaten its northern towns, enforcing its red lines after a nominal ceasefire failed to stop Hezbollah attacks.
