Italy voted to abolish its monarchy and establish a republic in the first free national election after the end of the Mussolini dictatorship. The referendum, held on 2 June 1946, produced 12,182,855 votes for a republic and 10,362,709 votes for the monarchy. Results from 34,112 of 35,236 polling districts were reported by Rome radio on 5 June.

Northern regions supported the republic.

Central and southern regions, along with Sicily and Sardinia, favored the monarchy, except for Umbria. Rome recorded 677,000 votes for the monarchy and 619,000 for the republic.

The High Court of Cassation announced nearly complete results in a ceremony on 10 June. Officials stated that remaining objections would not change the outcome. The prime minister said the court’s communication of a republican majority meant the republic was established. He added that the former king would leave Italy still holding that title.

The former king and a small party boarded a plane at Ciampino airport and flew to Portugal.
