Jakarta Expands Trap-Neuter-Release Program to Manage Stray Cat Population

Jakarta is scaling up efforts to manage its stray cat population through a trap-neuter-release program. 5 million stray cats, roughly one for every 10 residents.

The program catches stray cats, neuters them, and returns them to their original locations. Officials say the approach reduces future births while avoiding large-scale euthanasia or relocation.

Local animal welfare groups and city workers conduct daily trapping operations across neighborhoods. Captured cats receive vaccinations and are marked before release. The city has not released figures on the number of procedures completed to date. The initiative follows similar programs used in other major cities facing large stray populations.
