Retail prices for chicken and eggs in Japan rose to their highest levels on record in June. The agriculture ministry reported the increases reflect steady demand for affordable protein amid higher costs for imports.
The Japan TimesRetail prices of chicken and eggs in Japan reached record highs in June, according to data released by the agriculture ministry. The national average price of chicken rose ¥1 from the previous month to ¥155 per 100 grams. This marks the highest level recorded since the ministry began collecting the data in August 2003.
Demand for relatively inexpensive chicken remained solid even as overall food costs increased. Higher prices for imported chicken also supported stronger demand for domestic products, the ministry said. The price increase for domestic chicken followed broader market pressures that lifted costs across protein categories.
A packet of 10 eggs now averages ¥309 nationally.
This figure also represents the highest price level since tracking began more than two decades ago. The ministry attributed part of the rise to sustained consumer preference for lower-cost protein options during a period of elevated food prices. Higher input and import costs contributed to the upward pressure on both chicken and egg prices throughout the month.
