Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on June 11, 2026 that Japan will import the same volume of crude oil in July 2026 as in July 2025, replacing most Middle East deliveries with other sources. Takaichi made the statement at a special meeting of her ministers. She credited alternative supply sources for offsetting the effects of the Middle East war.
Japan had relied on the Middle East for over 90 percent of its oil imports. Takaichi said the country has diversified its supply chain. The United States expanded its crude oil exports to Japan tenfold, she said.
Japan also approached other oil producers to secure additional volumes. The Eneos Endeavor supertanker arrived at a refinery in Yokohama on Saturday, according to photographs published with the report.
