ESPNWashington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels said he likes the team's new offensive system but still has significant work ahead to master it. "I've still got a long way to go," Daniels said in Ashburn, Virginia, on June 17, 2026. The comments came during organized team activities as Daniels works to rebound from an injury-filled 2025 season.
The Commanders hired David Blough as offensive coordinator after last season following a mutual parting with Kliff Kingsbury. The new offense will feature more plays under center and less no-huddle compared to the previous system. For Daniels, the change marks the second offensive system he has had to learn in his first three NFL seasons.
He said he has looked comfortable with his footwork operating from under center but remains focused on other aspects of the scheme. "Just learning the new offense, terminology," he said. " Daniels played in only four full games and seven games overall during the 2025 season.
Multiple injuries -- a sprained knee, hamstring, and a dislocated left elbow -- caused him to miss the other contests. He threw for 1,262 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions while rushing for 278 yards and two scores in 2025. Daniels sat out the final four games after re-injuring his left elbow in a 31-0 loss to Minnesota in Week 14.
The 2025 season marked a sharp decline from 2024, when Daniels was named the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Commanders finished the 2024 season with a 12-5 record and reached the NFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1991 season.
Daniels made clear he has moved past discussing the previous year. "I'm done talking about last year," he said.
