Jeffrey Epstein Died in Jail Cell August 10 2019 Amid Unheeded Suicide Warnings and Unauthorized Materials
Cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione reported three suicide attempts by Epstein in July and August 2019. An internal investigation cleared Tartaglione of involvement in the July 22 incident.
nypost.comJeffrey Epstein died by suicide on August 10, 2019, in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center after at least three prior attempts, according to accounts from his former cellmate and evidence photos released in the investigation. Nicholas Tartaglione, 56, a former New York police officer and convicted murderer, shared the cell with Epstein after the financier returned from a bail hearing on July 22, 2019.
That hearing marked Epstein’s 13th day in custody.
Tartaglione told the New York Times that Epstein asked him point-blank how to make a noose days before July 22. On that date, Tartaglione found Epstein motionless on the floor with an orange fabric noose around his neck. Epstein initially told corrections officers that his cellmate had tried to kill him.
An internal prison investigation cleared Tartaglione of any connection to the July 22 incident. Tartaglione said he twice witnessed Epstein preparing to kill himself after that date: once tying a sheet to a grate over a cell window and once finding a noose under Epstein’s mattress. Tartaglione reported both incidents to jail guards, who laughed him off, he told the Times.
Another inmate, Peter Bright, recalled Tartaglione describing Epstein’s earlier attempts shortly after the August 10 death. When Epstein was found dead, his cell contained heaps of sheets and multiple nooses and strips of orange fabric that he was not allowed to have. Evidence photos released by the Department of Justice through the EFTA Files show the linens scattered across the cell.
An image from Epstein’s autopsy was also released as part of the investigation. Epstein was a child sex offender and disgraced financier.
