Jordan Reaches First World Cup After Decades of Qualification Efforts
Jordan will make its World Cup debut at the 2026 tournament after securing qualification through the Asian confederation process. The team opens against Austria and could face Argentina in its final group match.
bbc.co.ukJordan secured a place at the 2026 World Cup after finishing second in its second-round group behind South Korea. The achievement marks the country's first appearance at the finals following multiple failed qualification campaigns. The expanded 48-team format provided an additional route, yet Jordan still had to navigate two group stages and finish above Saudi Arabia in the opening round.
Officials described the result as the product of sustained investment in domestic structures and coaching continuity.
Jordan's closest prior brush with the finals came in 2014.
The side advanced through multiple Asian rounds before losing 5-0 on aggregate to Uruguay in an inter-confederation playoff. After that campaign, the federation shifted from short-term appointments to longer-term planning. Seven managers followed, six of them from Arabic-speaking nations, with two from Jordan itself.
A Moroccan coach took charge in June 2023 and introduced a compact defensive shape paired with rapid counter-attacks. Jordan reached the 2023 Asian Cup final for the first time, defeating Iraq and South Korea in the knockout rounds before losing to Qatar.
Jordan warmed up for the finals with 2-2 draws against Costa Rica and Nigeria. Subsequent friendlies against Switzerland and Colombia ended in defeats. The team will be based in Portland, Oregon, for its opening matches at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Its final group fixture is scheduled for 27 June in Arlington, Texas. Group J also includes Algeria and Argentina. Officials said the first two fixtures in Santa Clara will allow supporters to establish a temporary base before the side travels south.
