Josh Turek Wins Democratic Senate Primary in Iowa, Will Face Incumbent Ashley Hinson in November

Ashley Hinson defeated former state Sen. Jim Carlin in the Republican primary. President Trump endorsed Hinson to succeed retiring Sen. Joni Ernst. Turek positioned himself as a team player willing to work with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Wahls had vowed to oppose Schumer if elected. Turek highlighted his personal story during the campaign. “I’m uniquely the American Dream. In no other country on Earth could someone who’s gone through the economic struggle and the health care situation I grew up in be able to accomplish what I’ve been able to accomplish,” he said.
Wahls gained attention in 2011 for opposing a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. He focused his Senate bid on LGBTQ issues and economic policy. Turek declared that he is running against Ashley Hinson and Trump, not Schumer.
The Iowa Senate primary race tested competing visions within the Democratic Party. Democrats have not won a statewide election in Iowa since 2012, according to the New York Post. S.
Senate, the same outlet reported. Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand identified North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, and Alaska as top targets. Gillibrand listed Iowa among longer-shot prospects along with Texas, Florida, and Mississippi.
Turek has polled competitively against Hinson in early general-election surveys.
